I’ve been working on my auction doll for the GAW Barbie convention. The doll has been repainted, and the outfit has been made, but before I take photos, I wanted to create a backdrop to go with the doll. After Christmas, I found a faux window frame on clearance at Michaels. I decided attach it to a floor with L-brackets. Then the doll can stand on the floor and the whole thing can either hang on the wall or sit on a surface.
To make the floor, I started with a square of plywood. I picked up some edge banding veneer to make the hardwood floor at Menards. I simply cut “planks” to size with scissors, and then ironed them onto the plywood square with my iron. So much easier than using popsicle sticks! Once the flooring was ironed on, I used a stain marker to get the color I wanted. Now I just need to seal the floor and assemble.
I sew. My sister knits. We work in the same building, so we usually grab a quick lunch and then head to one of our favorite craft stores to get some exercise. Ok … shop. I look for beads, lace, fabric, etc., and she looks at yarn.
For the last couple of years, she has volunteered to go with me to the GAW Barbie Convention. So this past year, I told her she should make something for Barbie to sell out of our room. She started knitting these adorable throw blankets. One happened to end up in my box after convention and I just love how it drapes on the furniture and adds that something extra to my dioramas.
Now, we’re making them available in my Etsy shop. There are a variety of colors, sizes, and patterns to choose from. Check them out!
Today, my sister and I went to Frankenmuth, Michigan. For those of you who don’t know, Frankenmuth is a city founded by German Lutherans in the 1845. It is designed to resemble a Bavarian village, and is a huge tourist attraction. We were going for the craft show, but arrived early, so we started at Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland, which bills itself as the world’s largest Christmas store. It is.
At Bronner’s, I found a Byers Choice bird bath and a couple of Christmas ornaments that should work nicely in my Barbie dioramas.
After 2 hours at Bronner’s (and I’m sure we didn’t see everything!), we moved on to lunch … chicken dinner, of course. The Bavarian Inn and Zehnder’s are competing restaurants directly across the street from each other, and are both known for family style chicken dinners. Both are good, but today we choose the cafe in the basement of Zehnder’s because it has a buffet and there was no line.
Then we shopped at the craft show, River Place Shops (a quaint outdoor mall with adorable shops), and an antique mall, before heading to the huge outlet mall in nearby Birch Run. After the hour and a half ride home, I’m lounging with my feet up and a cat on my lap. Time for a nap! I think next time we’ll book a hotel room and spread out the shopping!
I’ve been crafting again today! I found some new findings that — combined with washi paper and tassles — make the cutest fans for Barbie and friends. Take note of the super cute cat and goldfish fans! Available now in my Etsy shop.
I recently visited a Target store and saw the cutest sweet shop in the toy aisle. It’s advertised as an accessory for 14” Glitter Girls dolls (kind of a smaller American Girl doll knockoff), but I thought the scale looked great for Barbie. So tempted …
An Etsy friend sent me this hankie in lovely shades of red and pink along with my last order of embroidered hankies. It had a tiny hole in one spot, so she couldn’t sell it, but she thought I could work around it. I knew I wanted to show off the angular lines without breaking them up too much, so I opted for a simple sheath with portrait collar. The belt, brooch, and hat are included, of course. Available now in my Etsy shop.
Did you spot my new lamp in the background? I’m trying to come up with workshop ideas for the next GAW Barbie convention. The lamp even lights up, although it’s hard to tell in this photo because of the photography lights I use.
I’ve been flat on my back for two weeks and haven’t been able to sew or do much of anything. So sorry if you’ve been looking for new dresses in my shop. But I started physical therapy this morning and hope to be back to work and sewing soon …
In the meantime, thought I’d share some photos I took a few weeks ago. I found this set of 3 magnets in the office supply section of Target last month. These little succulents are the perfect scale for Barbie dioramas.
